just drawing to draw...what a concept.

I don't know if you can tell, but I feel like I'm getting some of the rust off. I'm not getting so frusterated...and it makes me feel like I'm making some kind of progress. I don't know where I'm going yet, but I'm enjoying the ride a little more this week. Here are a couple little doodles from last night.

more painter fun.

here is a guy I painted up over the weekend. Not a total success, but there are a few little areas I'm fairly happy with.

sketchbooks

Here are a couple of pages of sketches. I love looking at other peoples sketches especially sketchbooks. I've known a few artists that keep the most amazing sketchbooks. Not me. I've never kept a scetchbook that I was very proud to show everyone, but here are a couple pages anyway.

Arrrrrrgg!

Had a fun time drawing last night. Most of my drawings are just trash, but it's fun to just sketch without a purpose and see what comes out. Here are a couple of pirates. There are "issues" I know, but they were fun to draw.

Ya never know what'll come out.

I'm a firm believer in using reference (when I used to paint realistically), but it sure is fun to draw from my head. I never know what might come out. Here is a lovely bathing beauty and a try at some expressions. Not much I know, but I'm just trying to keep my drawing goal alive.

Skiing on Monday

I got to skip work on Monday because a friend called up and asked me to go skiing. He had a FREE lift ticket to give me so how could I say no. Lift tickets are 75 bucks at Park City so I jumped at the chance. I had a great day...18 inches of new snow over the weekind made conditions perfect.

I've been trying to keep the drawing going...but was so tired after 12 hours of skiing, I flaked out completely. Here is a little bus I drew over the weekend. I tried to ink it, but it didn't come out too clean.

Hey, it's Friday!

All of the sudden I feel like a fool for wasting so much time not pushing myself. I've stayed up late this whole week trying to be productive and I've learned it's not as easy as it used to be...Here are a few more oldies from a guy who is feelin old.

Painter...better late than never.

I've been using painter for years while doing texture work at work, but I've never really tried to learn more than I needed to. Here is a little guy I drew and painted over the last couple of days. It was fun to paint something different in painter and it made me want to learn more...better late than never.

distractions

I can't believe it's Wednesday already. My new goal to draw more is still going strong...I've been trying to draw or paint everyday. I thought I'd post some pics of a pet project I've been workin on for a couple of years now. I've got this obsession with old bugs...I really don't know why. I've had several over the years. I found this old '61 in fairly good shape on ebay. Once I started to fix it up, I found that the front end had been bashed in a little. I cut the old front end off and replaced it with another nice straight section. Once I had done that I figured I might as well weld in a sunroof too. Here are a few pictures of my fun little project. I'm almost done!

here is the old front end

here is the new section all ready to be welded

new hole in the top!

a fresh coat of paint done in my garage

ALMOST DONE!

Monday already?

I painted a little sketch that my friend Mel did. I don't think my color was at all what he had in mind when he drew it, but different strokes for different folks. He's good with the pencil, always sketchin away. If you haven't seen his stuff, it's worth a look! http://www.melmade.blogspot.com

old and new

I can tell I'm going to like this. Posting my stuff is fun and I hope it'll drive me to get better. I've been at this a long time now...graduating with my degree in illustration over 10 years ago. I took a job doing book cover work right out of school. When that job ended I decided to try freelancing. I found a little nitch doing conceptual business type illustration and worked hard to grow my freelance business fulltime for 4 years. Then, thinking I needed to stablize my income for the sake of my growing family, I took a full time job again working at Saffire(a video game company). I've been lucky to work with some amazingly talented people for the last 7 years. To all those who have helped me with the transition from traditional to digital, all I can say is THANK YOU!

I thought I'd post some of my older stuff so everyone can see where I started.
This is all traditional work done a long time ago for a vanity publisher.

Hey, I'm a blogger!

Welcome to my blog. I'm new to all this, but I thought it would be a good way to start experimenting with artistic style. I've always loved to draw! I remember when I was young drawing became a "problem" at school. I would doodle on all my assignments and usually finish my drawing, but not my work. My buddy at work is a drivin artist and it's been fun watching him grow and mature as an artist over the last few years. He's blown past me and I've realized that I need to get back to what I love. Drawing!

Here is a little character I did last night. Hey it's a start.

My plan is to post something seveal times a week and use this blog as a type of artistic journal...and share my past and future work for anyone who might be interested. More to come...
