Illustration Friday: Theater

When I first saw this topic, my mind went back to the first musical I ever saw. Oklahoma. My high school performed it when I was in the 9th grade. It was amazing, I couldn't believe people so young could sing so well. I have to admit I've liked "most" musicals ever since.

So, I sketched out a quick doodle and painted it up. I like painting these little IF pieces, something fun to distract me from my concept paintings I've been doing. I sure wish I could get paid for painting in this style... I don't know the childrens market at all...at least not yet. If you are an art director or a children's illustrator and you have some good ideas where I might market this style, I'd love to hear from you! I'm currently trying to put together a mailing list and could use any tips you might have. thanks.

Oklahoma was the first musical I ever saw too!

You could join the Society for Childrens Book Writers and Illustrators--they have a lot of great resources.

You have a great style! Perfect for book illustrations. Check out jacketflap....I have a link to it on my blog. Love this illustration. That little wrinkle in the background sky...what a great touch!

this is terrific! i think it would be a great idea to take this character style, do some group pieces (you know, a luau, um, a frantic family holiday, old grannies lingerie shopping, etc...) and see how far this style takes you in more than 4 characters. and then try some more expansive scenes...maybe 1 or 2...see how the character styles fit together with how you think about and treat their environments. acccck. i sure hope i expressed that right. it's a wonderful style, and from my hum op, a very marketable one. :)
