I found a girlfriend for sucker boy!

longboard.

here is a sketch for a monday morning. I guess this comes from my California childhood. There is nothing like a quality skateboard. My son has a sector seven longboard and I borrow it all the time. skateboards have sure come a long way since the first sealed bearing roadrider wheels I had as a kid. Ah the good ol days!

"tomboy"

things sure have seemed busy for me lately. my goal to sketch everyday has not worked out so well, but I'm trying to get back into it. I started sketching this little girl this morning and it reminded me of my little niece. She is a girl, but you better not tell her that...she may just beat you up.

I've been trying to model in 3d.

I've been experimenting in Max. Here is a little character (actually the very first post here on my blog) I've been trying to model up in 3D. I'm still working on things. I've got him all there almost, now I've just got to mess with it a while more until I can get it closer to my drawing....but hey it's a start!

illustration friday: fat

I forgot to check the topic until just a few minutes ago....fat...that is fun.
here is a very quick little sketch. it needs some refinement, but I did it real fast just to see what I could come up with. I've been modeling my own little character this week so didn't want to take too much time away from that....Happy Friday Everyone!

sketch.

we as artists sure spend a lot of time developing our skills...I saw a lot of illustrators leave the profession over the past several years while things have been a little slow...I wonder what they are all doing now?

Illustration Friday: Robot

I know I promised no more old stuff, but this is 3d and is something I textured at work just a few years back....I thought it would work nicely for this topic...so I'm postin it anyway! I know, I can already hear it from you Pepe!

Happy Monday Morning!

I started a digital painting on Friday and I thought I'd post a sneak peek at a face detail. I'm not very far on it yet, but am having fun doing something a little more realistic. We'll see how things go and try to get some more painting time in on it this week.

something new!

my littlest brother called me on something last night. he asked, "how does posting 10 year old stuff help you find a new style?" Truth is, it doesn't. I was just trying to give the 2 people who look at my blog something else to look at. So that's it, no more old junk will be posted here! Duane, here is something new I did yesterday. It was done completely on the computer in painter. There ya go...go take care of your houses!

traditional stuff

here are some old "dark" pieces that were done over 10 years ago now for bookcovers. Keep in mind that a lot of these had type added over (or around) the illustration...that usually helped. I picked these few pieces out 'cuz they matched my mood. ;-)

Concept Sketches.

I love concept sketches, especially when they set a mood. I'm not very good at doing nice bold strokes and leaving it alone...I've always appriciated those concept guys that just lay it all out there so fast. Anyway, here is a concept type piece using my Tarzan sketch from last week

oil paints.

Now that I can move around in my studio again, I got the urge to paint something. I mean with real paints and brushes. It's been years. I had a little canvas so I thought I'd paint my daughter. Wow, without the undo, it's a lot harder to paint! Here is my progress, this is about 3-4 hours into it, basically an underpainting, but man I'm having fun. I'm not too happy with it yet, but I'm trying to bring it around. I'll try to finish it up and post it when I'm "done". I had to open most of my oil tubes with pliers.

Here are some little ink drawings I did years ago for a childrens book that basically turned out like a little coloring book. Just more stuff to look at if you want.

illustration friday: spring.

I thought I'd do something for illustration friday. This is Springboy. He can jump! Landing is a problem sometimes...look at that helmet. Anyway, thanks for stopping by to see my "spring".

looking WAY back

in all my cleaning this past week I looked through a lot of old stuff. I even found some college work! One of my favoite classes in school was a human head painting class from life. We got to take this class as seniors. I remember it being challanging and often frustrating. I remember thinking that I was doing fine at the time, but looking back at the work I did...let's just say I learned a lot. Here are three paintings from that class...these must have been three of the better ones, since I still have them....yikes. I think the class was about 3 hours long...so these sketches were painted in about 2 1/2 hours...I guess.

Studio

If you like the place where you work, you'll probably enjoy working a little more. That has been my thinking the last couple weeks as I've tried to clean up my home studio. I'm not kidding when I say it's been a LONG time since I've been able to walk freely around in there...or see the top of a desk. It's been out of control for years! So last week I finially got serious...here are my results. I know some of you have much nicer studios, my "studio" is just a room in the basement, but I've been lucky to hang on to that much space in my house! Hopefully I'll be able to start making it into something more soon.

Illustration Friday: Monster

I did illustration Friday for the first time last week. I had some fun, so I thought I'd get an earlier start this week. Who can pass on a topic like monster. I didn't want to make my monster too scarey, so I put it in underwear and socks...nothing is very scarey in underwear and socks! This is another dirty marker sketch done in painter. I'm liking that dirty marker.

Illustration Friday: Feet

I used to work with a guy that could sketch on the computer better than anyone else I'd ever known. His name was Mike May ("feeb"). He could draw on his tablet better than most artists can draw on a piece of paper. I was talkin to him this week and I asked him what brush he used to sketch...he told me he liked the dirty marker. So I thought I'd give it a try. (never really used that before) Here are a couple quick sketches done completely in the computer. This lower sketch is what I came up with while thinking about this weeks topic: feet. This is my very first time doing something for Illustration Friday, and it was fun! Happy Friday everyone.

draw sucka!

I sat down to sketch on monday and out came a little cowboy. fun! I've always loved painting cowboys, so I painted this one up. I'm sure I could take it a lot farther, but I'm calling it done.

here is my new header....

Raven

quick sketch from the weekend

Friday, March 17, 2006

What a fast week.

I can't believe how hard it is to find the time to post everyday. It might be better if I worked on things a little longer...that way I might be able to bring them to a finer finish. I keep telling myself that I need to just keep drawing and experimenting...it's really not about the finished piece yet. I'm trying hard not to get ahead of myself. Here are some sketches from this week. Have a great weekend!

Happy Thursday!

Here is a little baby dragon I painted up last night in painter. I'm getting a little faster in painter and feeling a little better letting some places be a little more loose.

"wanna help me shoot some scrapp?"

over the years I've painted my family more than anyone else. I've had my brothers and wife dress up as just about everything you can imagine. "ok, look a little more that way....no the other way....yah, ok wait, let me fix those wrinkles...hang on, almost there." looking through my stuff at home the last week or so has really reminded me just how much I've imposed on them...thanks!

Life!

Here is a little doodle that proves not all ideas in life are winners. My search for a fun new style continues...

I'm all over the place.

I'm all over the place. I've been cleaning up the home studio and looking through lots of old work. I really need to throw some of that stuff away, but can't seem to do it. Some of it is sooo nostalgic. I found the first paying freelance job I ever did. Ya shouldn't throw that stuff away right?
Here is a couple doodles...

Friday, March 10, 2006

Hey it's the weekend, so here is some older stuff.

My work had to move buildings a couple months back. I had to box up 5 1/2 years worth of junk from my desk and cube. I took it all home in boxes and it has been sitting in my home studio (right where I dropped it) ever since. I started looking through it last night and found a couple doodles worth keeping.

We used to have meetings all the time at work...not so much anymore...this pirate is a sketch I did a couple years back during one of those meetings. I found it in the junk box last night and scanned it in and "painted" it today.

these others are from the box of junk too...

another bug.

as I've mentioned before, I have a vw obsession. I sketched out this little bug at work and tried to give it a little "personality". I put a little value on it just to see what it would look like. I know this underside isn't exactly right, but I did this all from memory and had to 'fudge' it a lot.
